Château d'Épiré Savennières '23

One of the oldest and most celebrated domaines in Savennières, Château d’Épiré is rich in history, known not only for its beautiful architectural interpretation of the Petit Trianon at Versailles, but most importantly for its exceptional wines. Savennières is situated just southwest of Angers, on the north bank of the Loire River. The domaine has remained in the Bizard family continuously since the 17th century, and in 2018, owners Monsieur and Madame Luc Bizard entrusted the next generation, Paul Bizard, with the care of the estate. He farms 11 hectares, nine of which are entirely dedicated to Pineau de la Loire, known today as Chenin Blanc. Paul converted the vineyards to organic farming, a significant challenge given the region’s increasingly unpredictable climate and persistent disease pressure. The results of this change can clearly be felt in the quality and complexity of the current wines.

Savennières is known for producing a fascinating expression of Chenin Blanc, with lively acidity and pronounced minerality in its youth, before developing a remarkable range of aromas with age. The fruit for this 2023 Savennières comes from an 8.5-hectare vineyard planted on schist soils, with vines averaging 35 years of age. The juice rests for 24 hours before being racked into stainless steel vats for fermentation.

The 2023 d’Épiré has a beautiful nose, with notes of pear, lemon peel, and honey. The palate is classic Chenin, showing great focus and energy, with fresh apple, citrus, and mineral notes. There is refreshing acidity, but also a touch of weight and breadth on the front of the palate. Pair this with a cheese board or sashimi such as saba or hirame.
